A first of it’s kind lamp designed to give both light and mosquito protection at the push of a button.
The Need
In remote parts of the Philippines, children need light to study at night. Artificial light attracts mosquitoes that carry dengue and many families face a tradeoff between health and education.
CASE STUDY
What We Made
If the study ritual also triggers protection, kids can learn at night without added risk. Light for Hope was designed to be a first of its kind lamp that pairs a safe study light with mosquito protection at the push of a button.
How do you build a lamp for rural families in the Philippines?
We partnered with product development firm, Rocket Wagon, to help us design a solar-powered lamp that would repel mosquitoes. The entire engineering process took hundreds of iterations to get the lamp into it’s most functional, modular and lowest cost possible shape.
Made from low cost materials
We used only low cost materials to build the lamp so parts could be easily replaced in these remote regions.
Modular and Simple to Use
To activate the study lamp, just plug in the mosquito repellent in the back of the lamp and then push the button to activate both the light and mosquito protection.
School Charging Stations
We also installed solar panels and power banks in schools to make sure children had a place to safely charge their lamps.
“When it comes to education the best way to fight darkness is light.”
Results
• Lamp adopted in pilot schools; students able to study after dark
• Elevated brand relevance around public health and education
